Mandalay Hill, from which the city takes its name, is a 240m tall hill in the north east of the city centre.

As you can see from the image above the hill is festooned with pagodas and monasteries which are all lit up at night making for an impressive sight from around much of the city.

At the top of the hill is the Sutaungpyei Pagoda which you and every tourist in Mandalay can climb (with the aid of an escalator or apparently permanently out of order lift)  to enjoy panoramic views of the city below as the sun sets, a small section of which is shown below.

"What's that all lit up in the foreground?" I hear you ask. It's a "traditional" Burmese golf course of course, but hey, foreground interest is foreground interest, it can't all be pagodas and monasteries.
